WASHINGTON (Reuters) – White House Chief of Staff Ron Klein said on Thursday the United States would continue its close relationship with Britain and whoever succeeds Prime Minister Liz Truss, after the British leader announced his resignation.
The adviser added that US President Joe Biden will issue a statement later Thursday.
“Our country has always had a special relationship with the UK regardless of our president’s party affiliation or the politics of our prime minister,” Klein told MSNBC in a TV interview.
“This will continue regardless of who the UK chooses as its next prime minister.”
Klein cited many common reasons, including Russia’s attack on Ukraine, as areas where the two historical allies would remain allied. “We will be working very, very closely with whoever succeeds Prime Minister Truss,” he said.
Truss announced her resignation on Thursday, just six weeks after her appointment, and a leadership election in her Conservative party is expected next week.
The term Truss was derailed due to his economic program, which sent shockwaves through the financial markets and was almost abandoned.
