SEOUL, March 8 (Yonhap) — South Korea’s Unification Minister Kwon Young-si on Wednesday called for the United Kingdom’s role in persuading North Korea to give up its nuclear and missile programs and return to dialogues, citing London’s diplomatic ties with Pyongyang. South Korea’s Unification Ministry also announced.

The ministry said Kwon delivered the letter while meeting with David Ellis and Colin Crooks, the British ambassadors to North and South Korea, respectively, to discuss inter-Korean affairs and security issues on the Korean peninsula.

Kun called on the British government to play a role in persuading North Korea to give up developing nuclear weapons and missile programs and return to the dialogue table, according to the ministry.

The United Kingdom established diplomatic relations with North Korea in 2000, and opened its embassy in Pyongyang the following year. The UK Embassy in North Korea is currently closed due to North Korea’s restrictions related to COVID-19.

The ministry also indicated that the two envoys expressed their desire for an early resumption of the operations of the UK Embassy in North Korea, and pledged to cooperate with the international community to resolve North Korea’s nuclear and missile issues.
