As the UK has detailed, the main objective of the exercise was to improve interoperability and enhance coordination between UK military forces and the Falkland Islands Defence Force, in the face of the challenging terrain of the Falkland Islands to improve their operational capabilities.

2 SCOTS, officially known as The Royal Highland Fusiliers, is a light infantry battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. The regiment was, prior to its restructuring on 28 March 2006, an independent infantry unit, created by the merger of the Royal Scots and the Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment) in January 1959.

So far, the Foreign Ministry has not commented on the matter, which is causing concern in diplomatic circles because they consider that there is a gradual abandonment of the claim. Those around Mondino defend this position on the grounds that “the claim is not better because it is shouted” and indicate that it is time to change the strategy to achieve better results.

In early July, as announced by the LPO, The Telegraph reported that the plan was to drill 23 wells to be exploited by an Israeli company on the islands, which had not received a response from the Argentine government.

From this standpoint, and although the government is convinced of the correct path regarding this historical claim, the number of skeptics of the official political strategy is greater than the number of supporters of it.

Anger at Foreign Ministry over Mondino’s failure to include Malvinas case in Mercosur document

An example of this is the tension between Mondino and the ambassador to the UN, Ricardo Lagorio, over the risk of losing support in the decolonization committee, which LPO exclusively revealed.

In this context, Argentine diplomacy has called the official policy towards the Malvinas the “Plaza Doctrine”, in reference to Ambassador Mariana Plaza, who proposes to set aside the claim to the Malvinas and cooperate with them in trade and culture.

Plaza is ambassador to London but does not have the rank to hold the position, and her husband Carlos Gonzalo Ortiz de Zarate is her second. Both files were removed by José Maynes from the promotions approved by the Senate.

As far as the LPO knew, the anger towards Plaza was widespread. The de facto ambassador to the UK was fourth in the diplomatic hierarchy. Foreign Office sources said she was “very pro-British and was the theorist of rapprochement with England”.
