Chorostecki, who comes from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and the Institute for Biomedical Research (IRB), received the assistance awarded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation to young researchers in the 2021 call.
Graduated in Computer Science and PhD in Biological Sciences from the National University of Rosario (Argentina), he majors in biosciences and biotechnology and studies the evolution and structures of non-coding RNA in animals, plants, and fungi.
Barcelona, January 23, 2023. – Researcher Uciel Chorostecki, who has recently been awarded the Ramón y Cajal Scholarship for Young Researchers awarded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, has joined the Department of Basic Sciences at UIC Barcelona.
Chorostecki, a biosciences and biotechnologist, holds a degree in Computer Science and a PhD in Biological Sciences from the National University of Rosario (Argentina). He did a postdoctoral research project at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB).
His lines of work focus on trying to understand RNA biology using computational strategies. Combining computational methods, high-throughput structure screening techniques, and molecular biology experiments, Chorostecki’s team aims to generate a wealth of original information by revealing new and unexpected functions of RNAs of different types.
Throughout his career, Uciel Chorostecki has published 14 scholarly articles in prestigious journals, five as first author, and has received grants such as the Marie Sklodowska-Curie, Juan de la Cierva Postdoctoral Fellowship, or Wood-Whelan Fellowship. Likewise, he has received many honors from international scientific organizations and has participated as a guest in meetings and conferences in various countries.
In addition to his experience as a researcher, he has worked as a teacher for more than ten years and has devoted himself to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students from various fields. In 2021 he founded Kresko RNATech, a startup company for food and cosmetic products based on small regulatory RNAs.
In the field of basic sciences at UIC Barcelona there are already other researchers from the Ramón y Cajal programme. They are Roman Perez, director of the university’s degree in Bioengineering and an expert in biomaterials for tissue regeneration. Adam Ranson, chair of the Cortical Circuits Research Group; and Ronnie Wright, also recognized with a CaixaResearch Validate Grant for research into effective treatment for aggressive breast cancer.
The Department of Basic Sciences is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of UIC Barcelona and brings together different research groups, which develop projects in areas such as biomedicine, bioengineering or psychology. The department is made up of many researchers, some of them recipients of prestigious awards such as Ramón y Cajal, Beatriz de Pinós or Marie Curie grants.
