Tropical wave threatens Guatemala with heavy rains

The scientific authority expected, in a statement, storms in the afternoon hours in the southeast, Bocacosta and southern coast regions, where severe weather events had been recorded in recent nights.

Weather conditions – added Insovime – could cause severe local storms (heavy rain, strong winds and possible hail).

The highest rainfall recorded in the past 24 hours by the Bureau of Analysis and Forecasting was in Puerto Barrios, Caribbean province of Izabal (52.0 mm), and Esquipulas, Chiquimula (16.3).

He pointed out that in the rest of the stations, records of less than 10 millimeters accumulated.

The largest accumulation this time could occur in Bocacosta, in the central Altiplano, south of Valles de Oriente and south of Petén, on the border with Mexico.

He recommended maintaining the necessary precautions in the face of the expected rainfall that may cause flash floods of rivers, floods, mass movements, collapses in the volcanic chain or damage to the country’s road network.

For its part, the National Coordination for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) warned that the approach of the eastern wave could generate rainfall and electrical activity.

In a recent report on the 2024 rainy season, which ran from May to October, the report noted 1,412 incidents across the country, with 22,228 people evacuated.
