The President of the Spanish League, Javier Tebas, confirmed today, Tuesday in Buenos Aires, the Spanish League’s interest in holding one of its competition matches in the United States in the 2025-2026 season, and did not rule out the possibility of that. The championship match could be played in Argentina.
“It is a goal that we have been striving to achieve for a long time (…). Let’s see if (on this occasion) it is the decisive goal,” the Spanish League leaders said during the annual Sportel Rendez-vous event. The Spanish League has already tried to hold two of its competitions in the American city of Miami, Girona vs. Barcelona in the 2018-2019 season, and Villarreal vs. Atletico Madrid in the 2019-2020 season, but to no avail in both cases. Regarding the possibility of two Spanish top-flight teams competing in a match in Argentina, Tebas acknowledged that La Liga “could imagine it”, but strongly criticized the current board of the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
“They will have to change their leaders. I don’t think they will cooperate much,” the president said, referring to the team of the South American country’s federation president, Claudio “Czeche” Tapia.
