The Georgia Republican said the eight party colleagues who voted to oust then-President Kevin McCarthy on Oct. 3 “unleashed rage” at the internal conference of his political force.
“Well, right now, the House can’t govern,” he commented, “and I think ‘the eight people who betrayed the Democrats and joined with them to defeat 96% of the caucus unleashed a fury I don’t think they could have dreamed of.’ “
Gingrich warned that there was a “very real danger” that someone would be elected and, within a few weeks, “a group of people would explode and decide to go back to the same mess.”
After McCarthy’s ouster, the congressman called on House Republicans to expel Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, who pushed for Trump’s impeachment, and cancel the effort.
Those who also supported the measure included Andy Biggs (Arizona), Ken Buck (Colorado), Tim Burchett (Tennessee), Eli Crane (Arizona), Bob Goode (Virginia), Nancy Mays (South Carolina) and Matt Rosendale (Mountain). During the past few days, the candidates who tried to reach the position faced an internal conflict that prevented some candidates from obtaining the 217 votes necessary to obtain the presidency of the chamber.
Initially, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (Louisiana) rallied GOP support and defeated Jim Jordan (Ohio), but withdrew after a day when it became clear he would not reach the magic number.
Jordan insisted on staying in the race and was able to beat Austin Scott (Georgia), but then he hit a wall that did not allow him to exceed three votes in the plenary session.
Far from retiring, the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee in the House of Representatives insisted on nominating him, and what he received was a painful blow, because the internal conference turned its back on him, which brought everything back to square one.
At least nine Republicans have submitted their names to run for the position of “president” or head of the body, and it is expected that a forum for the candidates will be held tonight and tomorrow. They will hold the internal elections and then transfer them to the general session.
McCarthy took the gavel in January after 15 rounds of voting and was ousted on a motion of impeachment that was historic, as never before had a Speaker of the House been ousted in this way.
The House of Representatives of the United States Congress has 435 members, 222 Republicans (a narrow majority) and 213 Democrats.
