In a joint press conference, Annan expressed that body’s interest in resuming consultations with international mediators for the Middle East (the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and Russia) in search of a solution to the conflict.
On the subject, Lavrov supported the proposal to hold the so-called Quartet in Madrid and expressed confidence in the ability of the United Nations to organize the meeting as soon as possible.
The two sides also confirmed, during the official talks, they also analyzed the situation in Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, Yemen and Cyprus.
Another topic discussed was joint cooperation to face the challenges of climate change and the Covid-19 epidemic.
Regarding the latter, the Secretary-General of the United Nations confirmed that he would support the recognition of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine by the World Health Organization, and stressed that this process is underway.
“We very much appreciate that Russia has provided the opportunity to vaccinate United Nations personnel with Sputnik V. It is a very good sign,” Guterres told reporters.

Lavrov pointed out that Guterres’ visit to Moscow, which will last until May 14, is a contribution to further developing the close relations between Russia and the world organization.
He warned that “the best solution to all problems” is to organize negotiations on a solid foundation of the United Nations Charter and the central role of coordination in the United Nations.
