Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, while visiting Buenos Aires as part of his three-nation tour of Latin America, held official talks on a wide range of issues, including the regional Malvinas issue.
Buenos Aires. – “India has reiterated its support for the resumption of negotiations to find a solution to the sovereignty issue relating to the Falkland Islands issue in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly and the Special Committee on Decolonization,” issued a joint statement. A statement issued by the Indian Foreign Ministry announced at the conclusion of Jaishankar’s visit to Argentina.
According to a report in India’s newspaper “The Hindu”, a spokesman for the British High Commission said that the citizens of the islands have been informed that they do not wish to have any further discussions on sovereignty. “The United Kingdom has no doubt about its sovereignty over the Falkland Islands and the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding sea areas, nor about the principle of the right of the Falkland Islanders to self-determination enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations,” the spokesperson said.
India’s support for the Falkland Islands, ahead of next month’s session of the United Nations General Assembly, indicates greater cooperation between India and Argentina on global platforms.
It should be noted that India has traditionally supported a negotiated solution to the territorial issue which Argentina is expected to highlight in upcoming multilateral events, including at the United Nations.
A spokesman for the British High Commission dismissed the possibility of resuming negotiations, saying: “Discussions about the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands can only take place if the islanders want it. They have made it clear that they do not.”
