A spokesman for the British Ministry of Defense questioned information about the alleged presence of British intelligence personnel in Ukraine, revealed by classified American documents, which, according to him, suffer from a “dangerous level of inaccuracy.”
“The highly publicized leak of what was presented as classified US information is dangerously inaccurate,” a Department of Defense spokesperson said on Twitter late Tuesday.
“Readers should exercise caution before relying on claims that could spread misinformation,” he added.
British media such as the BBC and the Guardian cited the document, dated March 23, which indicated the deployment of 50 British Special Forces to Ukraine alongside their counterparts from other Western countries.
According to the Guardian, the document indicates that half of the Western forces present in Ukraine between February and March will be British.
Pentagon spokesman Chris Meagher confirmed Monday that the fact that these documents are circulating online poses “an extremely serious national security risk and can fuel disinformation.”
“We continue to investigate how this happened and the extent of the problem. Steps have been taken to look at how and to whom this type of information is provided,” she added.
