The UASLP School of Medicine celebrates its 145th anniversary – La Jornada de San Luis

The Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosi celebrated on February 15 of this year its 145th anniversary, after a decree was issued on January 29, 1877 to build a medical school and inaugurate its chairs, so that on February 15 of the same year, the first class of anatomy was taught from by Dr. Leon Villasinor. The director of the Scientific and Literary Institute at the time was Dr. Ignacio Gama, and the state governor, Commander Carlos Díez Gutierrez.

During the celebration of 145 of the profession, the current Director of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Ismael Francisco Herrera Benavente, emphasized that during all these years, the task of training health professionals has been accomplished, through 29 undergraduate and postgraduate programs of knowledge generation to address the major health problems of the population.

“We always strive for continuous educational development in accordance with national and foreign quality standards, all in accordance with its vision and mission.”

He stated that due to its quality in medical education and social recognition, the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosi School of Medicine is a national benchmark and currently ranks among the public colleges in the country.

Herrera Benavente stated that the teachers who came before and generously shared their experiences and wisdom, generated scientific knowledge, and being fundamental pillars of what the campus is today, should be remembered with great admiration and respect.

He added that to celebrate the 145th anniversary, the “Who are we and where are we going” conference was held, which was presented by Dr. Carlos Aboud Mendoza, Professor Emeritus of the College of Medicine for more than 35 years, and President of the College of Medicine. Trainee in the Department of Medicine, innovator and coordinator of the specialty of Rheumatology, recognized locally and internationally in his field of specialization.

In his talk, Dr. Carlos Abboud provided some of the most relevant data for the college, emphasizing the origins and whereabouts of the campus, which has graduated nearly 5,375 professionals in its 145 years of life.

He said the most memorable date is 1877, but it was in 1621 when Juan de Zavala donated fifty thousand pesos to found the Colegio de la Compañía, occupied by the Jesuits, and later moved to Colegio Guadalupano Josefino, where the chair of medicine is known to have been taught , and in 1874 there was already talk of preparatory education in medicine. Majors were first created on campus, followed by master’s and doctoral degrees, and academic mobility.

A notable fact given by Dr. Carlos Abboud Mendoza is that in the final qualification of the National Examination for Medical Residency Applicants, in 2020, the UASLP is positioned with the Faculty of Medicine as the spearhead for public universities.

Finally, he realized that the physician must benefit his fellow men and that distributive justice must be a part of his chief concepts at all times.
