Beijing, and the presidents of China, Xi Jinping, and the United States, Joe Biden, concluded their first direct contact today, which was marked in conjunction with the promotion of healthy and stable relations between their two countries, in an ongoing confrontation.
The meeting was held via video link and followed two phone calls made by the leaders this year, in addition to the various dialogues of other senior officials of their governments.
As it turned out so far, the two sides have analyzed “strategic and core issues” in their bilateral relations.
However, in his first speech, Xi insisted on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and the search for win-win cooperation, with both managing internal affairs and shouldering international responsibilities.
He noted that “China and the United States, as the world’s two largest economies and permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, need to strengthen communication and cooperation (…) and work together to advance the noble cause of world peace and development.” .
In his view, a healthy and stable relationship between Beijing and Washington is essential to promoting individual development, safeguarding a peaceful and stable international environment, and seeking effective responses to global challenges such as climate change and the COVID-19 epidemic.
According to a statement issued at the beginning of the talks, Biden expressed his willingness to have a frank and fruitful conversation with Xi, and stressed the two sides’ responsibility to seek competition between their countries without falling into conflict.
“We need to rebuild consensus, be clear and honest about our differences, and work together on areas of mutual interest, particularly on global issues like climate change. The relationship between our country has a huge impact not only for us but for the entire world,” he added. .
The virtual meeting had a first moment and then continued after several minutes of break.
Each president was accompanied by a set of important positions of executives.
The first presidential exchange was in February, and Xi stressed the need to re-establish various dialogue mechanisms to accurately understand each other’s political intentions and avoid misunderstandings.
He also stressed the importance of managing differences when they exist, seeking cooperation where desired, betting on mutual respect and contributing to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, promoting economic recovery and peace on the planet.
But he called on Washington to be careful in dealing with issues such as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Xinjiang, among others, because they are internal to China and are related to its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
These statements strengthened China’s position to upend relations with the United States, in light of the ongoing friction.
