Phan Thong made the assessment during a meeting with Secretary-General of the People’s Revolutionary Party and Lao leader Thongloun Sisoulith, which was held in the context of the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.
He stressed that Vietnam always attaches importance to its relations with Laos and considers its neighboring country a priority in its foreign policy.
For his part, Sisoulith stressed that Laos values its relations with Vietnam and has made unremitting efforts to strengthen and develop the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation in a more sustainable and profound way.
During the dialogue, the two leaders decided to continue strengthening their close political relations in the midst of complex global changes, and agreed to intensify cooperation, in particular, in the fields of defense and security, which are considered one of the pillars of bilateral relations.
They also reached consensus on improving the quality and efficiency of cooperation between Vietnam and Laos in the field of education and human resources development during the period 2021-2030, in addition to removing obstacles to the implementation of important economic, trade and investment projects.
Phan Thong and Sisoulith also called for closer coordination to ensure Laos successfully fulfills its role as chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2024, thus helping to strengthen the central role of this group.
