HANOI, Jan. 17 – Vietnam’s President, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, resigned on Tuesday over alleged corruption issues in the administration as that country’s Communist Party Central Committee accepted the resignation.
According to national media, the ex-president was responsible for various “malfeasances with grave consequences” by officials, including two deputy prime ministers and three ministers, according to Telesur.
After those officials resigned and others were subjected to criminal proceedings, Phuk, who served as prime minister between 2016 and 2021, decided to resign of his own volition.
At the same time, the former head of state left the corresponding posts in the Politburo and the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
With this decision, the 69-year-old Asian politician, who took office in 2021, became the first head of that country to leave office before the specified period.
Vietnamese media highlights that although there were violations in training as a public servant, the former president played a relevant role within the administration in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
For his part, the Vice President, Phu Thi Anh Xuan, will serve as interim head of state until the official appointment of who will also serve as the head of the National Security and Defense Council.
