The Hisham Port, part of the Peel Ports Groupreduced carbon emissions from its plants, equipment and ground vehicles by up to 90%, to be the first to do so in United kingdom.
The port confirmed that all of its vehicles, factory equipment, forklifts, locomotives and related equipment are now powered by electricity or hydrogen-treated vegetable oils (HVO).
While the use of 100% renewable electricity is the ultimate goal of the port operator, HVO uses oils of vegetable origin in its composition, reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions by up to 90% and direct emissions of particulates, such as dust. , smoke and other fine materials up to 65%. HVO can be directly substituted for diesel fuel and is generally considered a more environmentally friendly option than diesel due to its lower NOx emissions.
Louis McIntyre, Managing Director of Port Services at Peel Ports Group, “We are transitioning our entire fleet of vehicles and ground equipment to work with electric or HVO on our path to becoming net zero group-wide by 2040.”
“While HVO as a transition fuel provides significant improvement, we are working with manufacturers and suppliers to explore long-term solutions for the next generation of land equipment. Heysham requires less machinery and equipment in its operations than at some of our larger ports; this means we have been able to reduce emissions faster as part of our conversion plans. We are confident that once the rest of the equipment has been converted and gone from gas in our on-site office, Hesham will become one of the UK’s first ports to be 100% carbon-neutral.”
Heysham Port is located in northwest England, due to its proximity to major industrial parks, and provides a critical and direct gateway to the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man.
The Port of Hesham handles a wide range of cargo, including Ro-Ro, bulk agricultural products, automobiles, project freight and energy products, as well as providing large warehousing and storage facilities.
