The Italian Foreign Minister concludes a working visit to Lebanon (+ photos)

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, on his first visit to the region, discussed with Army Commander Joseph Aoun ways to support the Lebanese army in light of the difficult economic and financial conditions.

Through his Twitter account, Tajani thanked General Aoun for his words of appreciation for the efforts of the Italian contingent in the United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL) to ensure peace and security on the country’s southern border.

In this sense, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Italian government participated with the members of the UNIFIL battalion in his country, highlighting the field value and the respect that the Lebanese people enjoy.

Speaking with interim Defense Minister Maurice Salem, the head of foreign affairs reaffirmed Rome’s commitment to strengthening security and stability in the so-called Country of Cedar.

Tajani also highlighted the embodiment of the maritime border demarcation agreement between Lebanon and Israel, signed separately at the end of last October after more than two years of indirect negotiations.

Yesterday, the Italian Foreign Minister discussed with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and the head of the interim government, Najib Mikati, the general situation and the need to expedite the election of a new president for the Lebanese Republic.

Local authorities praised Italy’s participation in UNIFIL and the European country’s active presence in humanitarian support to the nation.

For his part, Tajani expressed Italy’s determination to once again be the first economic and commercial partner of Lebanon, “with which we have great friendship.”

Italy contributes the second largest military force within UNIFIL and supports unity, sovereignty and independence; It is also working to achieve the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701.
