The US government announced Thursday that it will increase the monthly number of asylum seekers at the southern border to 40,000, to process entry into the country legally.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement that the appointment slots, distributed through the CBP One app operated by Customs and Border Protection, will increase from 1,000 to 1,250 per day.

According to the text, this measure “eliminates smugglers while at the same time providing a safe, orderly, and humane process for non-citizens to access ports of entry rather than attempting to enter the United States illegally.”

This process was implemented at the border, following the end of Title 42 on May 11, which allowed the urgent removal of migrants without allowing them to apply for asylum.

Ending pandemic-era policy has not yet resulted in increased immigration, though DHS officials say it’s too early to tell if that trend will continue.

Asylum protection seekers must use the CBP One app to schedule an appointment, during which they will face an initial check to see if they qualify.

Although the number announced Thursday represented a significant increase in potential asylum cases, the Joe Biden administration has implemented other restrictions on the process, including those not first seeking protection in another country along their route.

“We continue to impose consequences on immigrants who transit illegally, and those who do not establish a legal basis to remain in the United States will be removed. CBP will conduct a further expansion of available daily appointments, as processes and efficiencies allow,” DHS confirmed. the National.
