The Grammy-nominated Latin group was congratulated in Colombia

This is recognition of their talent, perseverance, creativity and commitment to preserving and spreading Afro-Colombian culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Cantares del Pacífico is a group made up of young artists from Buenaventura who perform traditional rhythms from the Colombian Pacific coast, such as curolao, bond, abuzao, and aguabajo.

This group appeared in 2005 in order to protect the cultural manifestations of that Colombian region and for this reason its music is an expression of the diversity, joy and resistance of the communities of African origin that inhabit this region.

He stressed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sees with pleasure how groups associated with the Comprehensive Program for Children and Adolescents with Opportunities and the Cultural and Sports Diplomacy Initiative can prevent the recruitment and use of minors by illegal armed groups.

This initiative began in 2011 after the national government voluntarily accepted Resolution 1612 of 2005 of the United Nations Security Council. Cultural and sporting exchanges connect boys, girls and adolescents and create inspiring experiences for their communities.

The group expressed on its personal page on Facebook about the nomination for the twenty-fourth session of the Latin Grammy Award: “We are happy and grateful to God, life, and our ancestors for these doors that are opening, and for the opportunities that are coming to us.”

This encourages them to continue bringing their music and the history of the Colombian Pacific region to all parts of the world, he stressed, thanking those who listen to them on all digital platforms.

The group sings about experiences, work, fruits, mining, even gold, people of African descent, and the problems they face being a minority.

Leader, researcher, lawyer and marimba performer, Irene Korath, the main voice of the group, confirmed to Radionica, regarding their latest album Aguajes de Mar y Manglar, that they also sing on instruments being so amazing.

He added, “The marimba is the mother instrument. The drum carries the tone of our rhythm. The konono invites others to come closer. The sound is the most important in calm music because we have many musical melodies that we do not have.” It requires the rhythm that accompanies the songs,” which is a recurring characteristic in all of the group’s works.
