LONDON, November 20 (Prensa Latina) Local newspapers reported today that the Labor Party will abolish the House of Lords of the British Parliament if it manages to wrest power from the Conservatives in the next general election.
And according to the Sunday edition of the Guardian newspaper, Keir Starmer, the leader of the main opposition force, intends to eliminate the power of politicians to appoint members of that legislative body, after he indicated that the Conservative Party has been in government since 2010, filling it with lackeys and donors.
Instead, adds the paper, Starmer will create a new Chamber whose members will be chosen by popular vote.
As part of the reform, party members will first be consulted on the future composition and size of the new body – currently with 784 lords – and then the final proposal will be included in the political manifesto that Labor will present to elections due at the start of 2025.
I want to make it clear that we need to restore the British public’s confidence in our system of government, and reforming the House of Lords is only one part (of that process), says the Labor leader’s paper.
According to Starmer, people no longer trust politicians and politicians to bring about change.
The members of the House of Lords, whose main function is to review and amend laws approved by the House of Commons, are appointed by the government, and the rest of the political parties, although in other cases the office is held by members of the hereditary nobility.
In recent years, there have been questions about the excessive number of lords, and some appointments have been criticized, including that of Russian tycoon Evgeniev Lebedev by then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
