BUENOS AIRES (AP) — The 2024 America’s Cup will be held in the United States in the middle of that year and will feature six CONCACAF teams as guests.
CONMEBOL, the entity comprising the ten South American football associations, on Friday confirmed the venue for the next edition of the continental national team competition after signing a strategic cooperation agreement with its counterpart from North America, Central America and the Caribbean.
The agreement also includes joint participation in other tournaments for the women’s national team and a new club tournament.
The seat of the next Copa America, the oldest championship for national teams in the world, has been vacant since Ecuador’s resignation from the organization that corresponds to it, according to the rotation of the ten countries that make up CONMEBOL. The South American country cited problems of insecurity.
At the same time, the United States, Mexico and Canada – co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup – are particularly interested in playing against teams from other continental confederations to stay in the competition, as they will not be playing in the qualifiers.
The six invited CONMEBOL teams will qualify for the next Copa América during the 2023-24 Nations League.
The date for the Copa America dispute has not been set, but CONMEBOL has announced that it will be held during the northern hemisphere summer.
This will be the second time the United States has hosted this competition, and the first occurred in 2016 to celebrate the tournament’s centenary, the same year Mexico last participated.
El Tre has been a regular guest since 1993, during which time, he has played two finals; In 1993 they lost to Argentina and in 2001 they were defeated by Colombia. In 1997, 1999, and 2007, respectively, he finished third.
The format of the next edition will be 16 teams; 10 are from CONMEBOL and six are from CONCACAF, with teams from Confederation of North America, Central America and the Caribbean qualifying during the 2023-24 CONCACAF Nations League.
