Spain will donate a total of 30 million vaccines against… COVID-19, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez promised, when announcing new donations to Latin America, Africa and a mechanism World Health Organization (WHO).

At a press conference in New York, where he is participating in the United Nations General Assembly, Sanchez announced the donation of 7.5 million vaccines for Latin America and the Caribbean (Which is added to another item already donated for the same amount).

He also announced a donation of 7.5 million doses for countries south of the Sahel and North Africa And the same in the first quarter of next year for the Covax mechanism, which was launched by the World Health Organization to distribute vaccines among the least developed countries.

“This raises Spain’s full commitment to 30 million vaccines for countries that need them most,” Sanchez said, congratulating himself on the fact that his country is the seventh largest donor of vaccines in the world and third in the European Union in absolute numbers.

He stressed that this indicates the “solidarity of the Spanish community.”

Regarding the emergency caused by global warming, the Spanish Prime Minister announced that his country will contribute 30 million euros to the Climate Crisis Adaptation Fund.

Sanchez, who had to cancel part of his New York schedule due to the emergency caused by the eruption of a volcano on the Canary island of La Palma, explained the themes of his speech at the multilateral meeting.

He noted the importance of democracies being strong and having strong countries to deal with all kinds of emergencies, such as the global health crisis caused by the coronavirus or the climate crisis.

Likewise, the Spanish government’s commitment to pluralism. “In the face of global challenges, we must provide global answers,” he said.

He also met in New York with the Secretary General of NATO, with whom he called for the restoration of confidence between the allies after the dispute caused by the so-called submarine crisis.

This crisis erupted after an agreement signed between the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia meant the loss of a multi-million dollar contract signed with Canberra, which decided to purchase submarines from the United States.
