SEPE Creates Alliances to Train Teachers Using a STEM Approach: Diana Flores

The state’s Secretary of Public Education (SEPE) forged alliances with the Foundation for the STEM Movement and the Innovec Association (Innovation for Science Education), in order to declare the state a “STEM Territory,” in which teacher training with this approach would be a reality.

Diana Isis Flores Gutierrez, in charge of the environmental education area of SEPE-USET, explained that this initiative aims to strengthen the curricula with an emphasis on achieving the goals and principles of the New Mexican School, and therefore the STEM education curriculum will have a positive impact on the education system in our country , starting with teacher training, thus reaching students of different educational levels.

Whether through education, science or technology, the truth is that according to research conducted by the United Nations (UN), the younger generations are joining efforts and utilizing their skills to grow and learn in an environment of social equality and sustainable development.

For this reason, the support of both governments and the adults around them is essential to achieving these goals. This is how the STEM Movement Foundation initiative was born, a non-profit community association to train and recognize teaching work that takes the lead in changing the world by educating young people, using the STEM curriculum in Latin America. He added that he was a finalist in the STEM Talent Award for Educators during the year 2020.

The STEM approach to education, which first emerged in the United States in 1990 with a focus on work, attempts to encourage skills development for the 21st century in girls, boys, and youth; Orienting himself towards STEM, Flores Gutierrez explained that the STEM approach seeks these disciplines to be inclusive rather than isolated, which is why one of its goals is to train teachers.

“The study of STEM is not isolated subjects. They are detailed disciplines that can be developed through cross-sectional projects. This is why we are interested in communicating this approach to the country through links with associations,” he noted.

Although STEM education is for everyone, its primary focus is to serve girls, since women’s enrollment in professions in these fields is only 33 percent. Hence the need to attract girls at an early age to develop interest and curiosity in learning and training in the field of science, in order for them to be born with a career in technology and engineering.

In addition, the STEM approach is compatible with other learning methodologies such as Design Thinking or Montessori practices. He commented, “It may seem like something new to us, but if we are observant, either as parents or as educators, we will find that children carry out critical thinking, reasoning and modeling activities, even when playing and assembling with blocks. It is our job to foster these skills in them.”

In Latin America, countries such as Chile and Colombia have joined the initiative to be part of a STEM territory, taking advantage of the opportunity given by the Siemens Foundation, through its Red STEM Latam, to connect with other countries and participate in production processes. and design ideas and initiatives to implement educational approaches in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

The new generations are experiencing a revolution in technology, society and the economy, which is why they need tools to meet the challenges that the new world will ask of them. Articulating STEM education with a focus on sustainable development is key for them to meet these challenges.
