Russia expresses its solidarity with Mexico for attacking its diplomatic mission

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs received the Mexican ambassador to Russia and expressed its solidarity with its colleagues in the Mexican diplomatic corps regarding the events that occurred on April 5 around the embassy in Ecuador,” the statement read.

Moscow expressed to Villegas its wishes for a “speedy recovery” for the injured Mexican diplomats.

The memorandum adds: “The unconditional importance of compliance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, which is the unbreakable foundation for the maintenance of relations between States, is emphasized.”

Ecuadorian police attacked the Mexican embassy in Quito on Friday night to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas (2013-2018), who had just been granted political asylum from the North American country.

Glass was sentenced to six years in prison for alleged illegal financing of the Alianza País party, a case in which former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), who was accepted as a refugee in Belgium, was also convicted and politically excluded.

Thanks to a habeas corpus order granted midway through his sentence, Glass was released on parole on November 28, 2022.

At the end of 2023, the former vice president was also charged with alleged embezzlement during the reconstruction of the coastal province of Manabi after the 2016 earthquake, prompting him to seek asylum.

The embassy raid sparked outrage in Mexico, which severed diplomatic relations with Ecuador and threatened to sue it before the International Court of Justice for responsibility for violating international treaties.

Nicaragua also later announced the severance of bilateral relations with Ecuador. Many governments around the world, including the US State Department, have expressed their rejection of the government of current Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa's handling of this matter.
