Royon in the UK: Argentina as a Strategic Player in the Energy Transition

Energy Secretary Flavia Royon maintained a busy work schedule during a three-day visit to the UK. One of the priorities of his trip was to spread the potential of energy resources in our country and encourage investments that contribute to the diversification and sustainability of the national matrix.

As part of an invitation from the British Embassy, the secretary appeared at the Subsea exhibition, which was held in the Scottish city of Aberdeen. Royon spoke to businessmen about the possibilities of expanding marine activity in Argentina.

Before members of more than 100 companies involved in maritime logistics, Ruyon highlighted the country’s long history of crude oil exploration and production on its continental surface. In addition, he explained that “there are still vast areas to be explored, which represent great potential for investments that allow for greater growth in this sector.”

Then, on the same day, the National Authority toured the University of Aberdeen Technology Center and spoke with a team of researchers specializing in energy transfer and hydrocarbons.

In this regard, Royon agreed with academics on the need to build regulatory frameworks that encourage and at the same time provide balance for new forms of energy such as hydrogen. In turn, he also appreciated the exchange as an opportunity to learn about other countries’ energy transition initiatives.

On the political front, Royon met the UK’s ambassador to Argentina, Kirsty Hayes, and parliamentarian, Mark Menzies. He agreed with them on a common working agenda for the development of green hydrogen.

For the secretary, the meeting also served to “present the investment opportunities offered by our country in the field of renewable energy and oil and gas infrastructure.” He added, “We also assessed the issue of the energy transition, in which Argentina could play a strategic role due to its reserves of lithium, copper and other minerals.”

Finally, Royon had a working session with Mark Gerets, Executive Vice President of Exploration at Shell. Accompanied by Argentina’s ambassador to the UK, Javier Figueroa, she analyzed and contextualized the oil company’s investments in the country as part of a program aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in hydrocarbons in the medium term.

“We talked about the company’s current and future projects in Argentina, and about the necessary investments and opportunities in Vaca Muerta and in other already traditional basins such as the Gulf and Austral basins,” he explained.

Shell Argentina’s Director of Corporate Relations, Veronica Stanesia, was also part of the meeting.
