With 11 new sites for the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, it now reaches 738 sites worldwide.
PARIS, June 16 (RHC) The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) agreed on Thursday to integrate 11 sites from nine countries into the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
The 34th session of the International Coordinating Council of the UNESCO Program on Man and the Biosphere (MAB), a forum to be held in the capital from June 13-17, welcomed the designation of the reserves of Saudi Arabia, Australia, Cameroon, Chad, Georgia (II), Kazakhstan (two), Mongolia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
It also agreed to extend two Spanish sites that were already on the list, which now includes 738 sites in 134 countries.
Chad, Georgia and Zambia have joined the World Network of Biosphere Reserves for the first time, which was created to align human activities while preserving biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources.
The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, highlighted the importance of MAP and its contribution to 51 years of work, and welcomed the three countries that have listed the sites.
The network promoted by the multilateral entity for the protection of biodiversity already covers more than 1,300,000 square kilometers worldwide. (Source / PL)
