HAVANA, Jan. 30 (RHC) Germany beat world and Olympic champions Belgium on Sunday 5-4 on penalties, to win their third Men’s Hockey World Cup.

The regulation time for the FIH gold medal match ended in a 3-3 draw at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, India.

The Belgian explanations were provided by Florent van Opel (10th minute), Tanguy Consens (11th) and Timor Oroz (59th), with the first goals coming from field play and the third from a penalty kick.

As for the Germans, they crushed Niklas Filin (29), Argentine nationalized Gonzalo Pellat (41) and captain Mats Grambusch (48), the first two goals in penalties and the last in a field goal.

For their part, the Netherlands beat Australia in the bronze medal showdown, at the same Kalinga Stadium, 3-1.

The Netherlands (3rd), Australia (4th), United Kingdom (5th), Spain (6th), New Zealand (7th), South Korea (8th) and Argentina have occupied places from third to fifteenth in the World Cup. India (9), Wales and South Africa (11), Malaysia and France (13), Japan and Chile (15).

Australian Jeremy Thomas Hayward topped the cup’s top scorer list with nine goals, followed by French Victor Charlet, Dutchman Jeb Jansen and Belgian Tom Bonn with eight goals.

For the second time in a row in four years, the International Hockey Federation Championship was held in the Asian country, and the cities of Bhubaneswar and Rourkela hosted all matches from the group stage to the final on Sunday.

Pakistan is the most successful team in the Field Hockey World Cup, with four golds and two silvers, followed by the Netherlands (3-4-2), Australia (3-2-5), Germany (3-2-4), India. (1-1-1), Belgium (1-1-0), Spain (0-2-1), England (0-1-0) and Argentina (0-0-1).
