PAHO’s 59th Steering Board begins focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic

Washington-. Today, the 59th Steering Board of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) begins to focus on the response to the Covid-19 pandemic and health challenges in the region.

The meeting scheduled until the next twenty-fourth day is scheduled to include the intervention of the sector ministers in the Americas who will present the experiences of their countries in facing the current health emergency, due to the spread of the aforementioned disease caused by the SARS virus. – Cove-2.

During the opening session, interventions are expected from WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and his PAHO counterpart, Carissa Etienne; So are the presidents of Chile, Sebastian Pinera, and Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado Quesada.

Today, the Director of the Pan American Health Organization will present the annual report of her administration for the period from July 2020 to July 2021, which focuses on the organization’s cooperation to help countries respond to the pandemic, while preserving and enhancing their health achievements.

Also speaking today will be the President of the Inter-American Development Bank, Mauricio Clavier Caroni, and Secretary of the US Department of Health and Social Services, Xavier Becerra.

In addition, the Minister of Health and Social Protection of Colombia and the outgoing President of the Steering Board of the Pan American Health Organization, Fernando Ruiz Gómez, will intervene.

On Wednesday, September 22, they will provide an update on the status of Covid-19 in the region.

PAHO Steering Board discussions will address policies or roadmaps aimed at increasing the production capacity of essential medicines and health technologies in the region.

Another aspect to analyze is revitalizing immunization as a public good, digitizing the health sector, creating resilient systems, and post-pandemic recovery.

Activities will be held such as an event on technology transfer for the production of mRNA vaccines, where the PAHO will announce the beneficiaries and regional projects selected to develop these products, as well as the consortium of manufacturers that will work on this technology.

For an exchange on the overall response to the prolongation of the pandemic crisis and the link between health and the economy, the Director of the Pan American Health Organization and the Director of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Alicia Barcena, will convene a meeting in the context of this Council 59.

During the week the Board meets, the PAHO Award for Management and Leadership in Health Services 2021 will be awarded.
