How was Paddington Bear born?

During the Christmas holidays of 1956, writer Michael Bond noticed a teddy bear in a shop window near Paddington train station in London. He fell in love with it and took it to his wife, Brenda Marie Johnson. It was this little character in particular that inspired him.

In 1958, Bond, then a cameraman for BBC television, published his first book, A Bear Called Paddington, in which the beloved animal was the protagonist. This publication was made possible by Barbara Kerr Wilson, who read the manuscript in one go and immediately contacted Michael.

How did Paddington get to the UK?

Paddington having tea with Queen Elizabeth II
To gauge how popular Paddington Bear is in England, we have to remember that during the celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, a funny video starring the monarch and the beloved character was released. In the two-and-a-half-minute clip, the bear is seen sitting on a table inside the royal palace.
“Thank you for having me. I hope you have a wonderful jubilee.” Paddington is heard receiving the cup. When Queen Elizabeth II offers him tea, the character steps up to the table and drinks directly from the teapot.
Another moment that moved the audience was when the King and the Funny Bear shared a jam sandwich. “Would you like a jam sandwich? I always keep one for emergencies,” says Paddington. “Me too, I keep mine here (in my bag),” replies Isabel II.
