Nigeria and UK Foundation launch Code Clubs for digital literacy

The Nigerian Federal Government, through the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, has established a partnership with the UK-based computing education charity Raspberry Pi Foundation, to launch Code Clubs across Nigeria.

The initiative is Designed For students ages 7 to 17, Code Clubs is a series of coding clubs artificial intelligence (AI) Extracurriculars aimed at nurturing digitally competent and innovative young minds in Nigeria.

The Ministry said, in a statement issued today, Wednesday, November 8, about the program, that the programming clubs will work to introduce participants to the world of programming and digital technology, and encourage them to apply creative solutions in their daily lives. These clubs, which will initially start in 17 knowledge exchange centres, will later expand to other locations across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, highlights the importance of enhancing Nigeria’s knowledge pipeline through free coding clubs in collaboration with the Raspberry Pi Foundation. The initiative aims to accelerate the pace of the digital economy in Nigeria by enhancing technical knowledge and developing talent.

As part of the collaboration, the Raspberry Pi Foundation will provide educators and young participants with extensive toolkits, support and guidance. At the same time, the Ministry will oversee the establishment and operation of code clubs across the country through a cooperative framework.

Partners, including individuals, educational entities, and organizations dedicated to advancing computing education, will receive resources, support, and operational guidance from a designated central organization.

The Ministry indicated that the educational paths provided to Code Club members will cover a wide range of topics related to programming and technology, including robotics and electronics, game development, algorithms and problem solving, introduction to programming, basics of concepts, web development, and programming languages. and project-based learning.

In October, the Nigerian government introduced a program offering grants worth 5 million naira ($6,444) to 45 startups and researchers focused on artificial intelligence. This initiative is part of the newly launched Nigerian AI Research Plan, which aims to promote the extensive application of AI for economic progress.
