Britain’s new prime minister, Rishi Sunak, credits his experience studying business in California’s Silicon Valley for helping him expand his idea of what is possible.
Sunak, who on October 24 became the youngest Prime Minister in modern UK history and the first of Indian descent, received an MBA from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business in 2006.
“At Stanford, you are at the heart of an ecosystem and culture unlike anything I’ve seen in the world,” Sunak, 42, told Morning Pro in June. “Everyone is interested in changing the world, starting with the biggest dreams, and the ecosystem around them [el Valle del Silicio] He supports trying to help people achieve those ambitions.” Sunak also said that studying in the United States greatly expanded his way of thinking.
Prior to studying in the United States, Sunak worked in finance and applied to Stanford University with the intent of expanding his horizons in public service, Derek Bolton of Stanford Business School told Mercury News.
At Stanford, Sunak met his future wife Akshata Murti, and the couple stayed in California for several years after graduation. After returning to the UK, Sunak continued his financial career before being elected to the British Parliament in 2015. “Being in the US changed my life,” Sunak said in 2021.
As UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sunak has overseen the development of the country’s COVID-19 relief plan to help communities, businesses and unemployed workers tackle the pandemic.
