New UK action on the Malvinas unleashes Carmona’s response

Last Tuesday, Argentine Foreign Minister, Guillermo Carmona, Minister of Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic, at the Argentine Foreign Ministry published a series of statements on his personal website on Twitter about a new British government action against the Argentine sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands. As mentioned, the UK published its “National Maritime Security Strategy” in which the territories covered by the Malvinas case were incorporated.

By publishing a detailed map of the event, Carmona stressed that it refers to the areas in which the UK intends to implement its security strategy, but it is nothing more than a “British colonial map”. “With this action, the UK is demonstrating once again its lack of commitment to international law,” he said.

Another issue the official referred to was the “disturbing militarization of the South Atlantic,” a measure that Argentina has repeatedly denounced in large-scale international organizations against the United Kingdom. He stressed that this is happening under the pretext of “maritime security” that this “strategy” implies, in clear violation of the resolutions of the United Nations and the countries of the region, which consider that region an area of peace and cooperation. According to Carmona, all these movements are “contrary to international law” because they “seek to give clear legitimacy to the fishing and oil activities promoted by the United Kingdom in the Malvinas Islands”.

Carmona concluded in his “discharge” that Argentina has repeatedly protested the kind of action that the UK intends to carry out without any impunity, and that such unilateral acts are not only prohibited under international law under the Malvinas case but with reason, Argentina expressed rejected it.
