New rising rivers threaten to return floods in Delhi, India

According to a report by All India Radio News, Delhi Finance Minister Atishi Singh said that the discharge of more than 200,000 cups of water from the Hatnikund Dam in Haryana is the reason for the continuous increase in the capacity of the Yamuna River.

The official said the river is expected to cross the danger mark on Sunday evening with the possibility of flooding for the surrounding areas, which are still recovering from the floods that experienced a similar situation in recent days.

Until the beginning of this week, several areas of the capital, including the Red Fort, Kashmir Gate, Central Secretariat and Civil Lines, remained in recovery work due to river swells due to rains in northern India.

To counter the current scenario, Atishi Singh affirmed that measures have been taken with the aim of ensuring the safety of the residents and that the government is ready to take immediate evacuation measures if necessary.

The official added that after a thorough examination, the relief centers receive an overall improvement for the welfare of potential victims.

Meanwhile, in Gujarat, heavy rains in Junagadh, Amrili and Ahmedabad, caused floods the day before, leaving roads damaged and blocked, and houses and vehicles underwater.

The situation forced a meeting of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patil with the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) in Gandhinagar.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department expected heavy rains to continue in the south of the state until Monday noon.

Local authorities said nine specialized teams are present in the affected areas and so far 358 people have been rescued in Junagadh and more than 700 people have been taken to safe places.
