A meteor passed through the thin atmosphere of Mars
The rock looks a bit out of place than it usually is on the surface of the Red Planet, and that may be because it isn’t actually from Mars. According to the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI), the rock could be “a large meteorite with smaller pieces.”
Mars is the closest planet in the solar system to the asteroid belt and is regularly bombarded by rocks from it. Since the atmosphere is only 1% as thick as Earth’s, rocks usually pass through it without breaking apart too much. In fact, NASA is now catching the sound of a meteor hitting the planet.
However, more research is needed to confirm whether the donut-shaped rock is a meteorite, or whether it is an unusually eroded rock.
