Most UK voters feel that Rishi Sunak does not represent change

A new poll has revealed that a majority of Britons feel that Rishi Sunak does not represent a change for the UK.

The YouGov study follows the Prime Minister’s speech at the Conservative Party conference this week.

During a conference speech on Thursday (October 5), Sunak described himself as a man who could “fundamentally change our country”, in contrast to Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer, who described him as a “continuity candidate”.

Despite the Conservative Party having been in power for 13 years, Sunak noted that “it is time for a change” and that a vote for Labor would be a vote “to stay where it is and accept more of the same”.

However, Sunak’s attempt to reassert his leadership appears to have done little to sway British public opinion.

A YouGov poll of more than 3,000 Britons shortly after Sunak’s speech showed that only 13 per cent of UK voters believed the prime minister represented change.

Meanwhile, 69 per cent agreed that Sunak simply represents “more of the same”.

During his speech at the Conservative Party conference, Sunak pledged to introduce a range of new policies for the UK, starting with scrapping the HS2 extension between Birmingham and Manchester, and a smoking ban that will ensure people over the age of 14 cannot legally buy a cigarette or its substitute. The Prime Minister unleashed a tirade at the end of his speech when he harshly criticized transgender rights, telling the audience: “No one should be bullied into believing that anyone can be any gender they want. “A man is a man and a woman is a woman.”

Footage of this moment from Sunak’s speech horrified viewers, as Conservative Party conference members can be heard cheering and chanting in response to the hateful comment.

Although transgender rights appear to be at the forefront of the Conservative Party’s thinking, it is worth noting a previous YouGov poll which found that a majority of UK voters oppose Sunak’s views.

A major 2022 YouGov study found that 55% of Britons agreed that people should be allowed to identify as a different gender than the one listed on their birth certificate, while 49% agreed that bias against trans people in the UK was a major factor in the bigger problem.

Meanwhile, 42% of respondents showed little or no interest in the debate on transgender rights taking place at Westminster, despite MPs focusing on it.

So, despite the chilling response to Sunak’s angry comments, studies have shown that the Prime Minister’s views do not represent the masses. Indeed, the reaction to Sunak’s anti-trans rhetoric has been overwhelming, with LGBT advocates, celebrities, influencers and members of the public coming together to show their support for the trans community.
