Argentine President-elect Javier Miley thanked Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s congratulatory message on Wednesday with a conciliatory tone that contrasted with the rhetoric he displayed toward Beijing during his election campaign.
“I thank President Xi Jinping for the congratulations and good wishes he sent me through his message,” Miley said in a message on the social networking site
The hardline liberal, who won last Sunday’s elections by a large margin over the centrist Peronist Sergio Massa, added, “I send you my sincere wishes for the well-being of the Chinese people.”
During his election campaign, Miley stressed that he wanted to end trade relations with China, Argentina’s second largest economic partner after Brazil.
“We don’t make agreements with communists,” Milley, who defines himself as an anarcho-capitalist, has said on more than one occasion.

The president-elect also opposed Argentina’s accession to the BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), which was achieved this year under the term of outgoing president Alberto Fernandez.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said on Monday that Beijing wants to “work with Argentina to continue the friendship” between the two countries and for “win-win cooperation.”
“China always attaches great importance to the development of China-Argentina relations from a strategic and long-term perspective,” he said.
