March against Peruvian president leads to riots

LIMA, NOVEMBER 5 (PRENSA LATINA) Thousands of protesters marched today in the center of the Peruvian capital, demanding the impeachment of President Pedro Castillo, which led to riots.

The opposition protest began with a focus on the Paseo de los Heroes Navales, where protesters met from different parts of the city, with strong participation from the middle and upper sectors.

Groups arrived on foot chanting anti-communist slogans and insults against the head of state, as they were displayed on posters, and in fleets of buses rented by the organizers.

The Epicentro press portal showed a fleet of 13 luxury buses filled with parents of students from the exclusive Santa Maria School, from the upper class neighborhood.

The march, encouraged by the far-right political forces and the media, set off with verbal but non-violent fighting, towards the Congress of the Republic, in order to pressure it to agree to the vacancy (impeachment) of Castillo.

Police has isolated the march’s passage through Saint Martin’s Square with security fences and customer barricades, to avoid clashes with thousands of supporters of the progressive forces, who have been isolated in uniform.

According to eyewitnesses, the situation got out of hand when a group of protesters tried to advance towards the nearby government palace, bypassing one of the police barriers that prevented access to the historical center of the city,

Some police officers on horseback approached the group to push it back, officers on foot fired tear gas and most of the participants dispersed, after which a small group was left chanting in front of a police barrier that kept them in stalemate.
