Lebanon thanked Iraq for extending fuel supplies

Beirut, August 12 (Prinsa Latina) Today, the Acting Government of Lebanon thanked the Iraqi authorities for extending the country’s supply of fuel for the needs of the National Electric Power Company for one year.

According to the media office of the Prime Minister-designate, Najib Mikati, Lebanon has positively appreciated Iraq’s support to overcome difficult conditions as a result of the worst economic and financial crisis in its modern era.

Mikati personally conveyed his thanks to his Iraqi counterpart, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, stressing his readiness to strengthen relations and cooperation between the two countries in the spirit of brotherhood.

At the beginning of last month, the interim Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water Walid Fayyad, in the context of his visit to Baghdad, exchanged with the highest oil and financial bodies and the Iraqi Bank on the task of consolidating the contract agreement. of the fuel supply.

On this occasion, the Head of Iraqi Finance, Abdul Amir Allawi, expressed to the Lebanese Minister his readiness to discuss the possibility of extending and developing a memorandum of emergency financing of hydrocarbons on soft terms to facilitate and trade exchange.

According to analysts, the energy sector is one of the sectors most affected by the economic and financial collapse in Lebanon, as the state-owned company hardly provides a daily supply of up to two hours.

An agreement signed on June 21 between Lebanon and Egypt will facilitate the import of gas through Syria with the aim of boosting energy supplies and easing living conditions in the country.

Local media indicated that gas from Egypt, along with a separate deal to import electricity from Jordan, may increase Lebanon’s supply to about ten hours a day from the current two.

Figures from specialized agencies of the United Nations stated that the energy crisis is currently threatening the sustainability of basic water and health services throughout the national territory, putting the lives of thousands of families in Lebanon at risk.
