LONDON, May 23 (EFE) – Uruguay’s President, Luis Lacalle Poe, on Monday offered his country a haven of “confidence and hope” in times of uncertainty, at a conference in front of British investors and businessmen in London.

At the event, scheduled as part of his visit to the United Kingdom – his first to Europe since becoming president – Lacalle Beau emphasized that Mercosur “is not going as fast as he would like to conclude new trade deals, which he championed direct negotiations for his government.”

“We are trying to cooperate (with Mercosur); we will have a much stronger position if we go with our partners, but today they do not want to move forward so quickly. So we started (talking) with Turkey, we continue and he pointed to China, and now the UK … .. ” .

At the conference “Uruguay, a Trusted Gateway to South America – Opportunities in Green Finance”, organized by Canning House, Lacalle Poe was seconded, among others, by Minister of Foreign Affairs Francisco Bustillo, and Minister of Economy and Finance, Arbelchi Lilly.

“People are looking for stable and peaceful places to invest and live in. Our country is one of the most powerful democracies in the world, with strict respect for the separation of powers, very strong institutions and political parties,” the president said.

For Lacale Poe, the stability prevailing in Uruguay predates his accession to the presidency and will continue after his term.

“We can offer hope. We provide facilities for living and tax credits for investment,” he added.

The conference also served the Uruguayan president to affirm his “strong commitment to the environment”, as well as his country’s determination to “open up to the world”.

“We believe in environmental stewardship, long before we got into government, and we share that with the UK. When we talk about green finance, we work together,” he said.

Lacalle Poe previously met the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, with whom he focused on trade relations between the two countries and the investment potential offered by Uruguay. EFE
