Today, Monday, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz achieved his 100th victory in the ATP tournament against Dutchman Talon Grikspur. Alcaraz, who is second in the ATP rankings, beat Grikspur (36) 7-6, 6-3 and advanced to the round of 16 of the Indian Wells Masters 1000, where he aims to knock Novak Djokovic off the top spot. Circuit if he wins the Masters 1000 title on Sunday.
The 19-year-old Spanish prodigy had to wrangle against the grain throughout the first set, trailing behind with difficulty deciphering Grikspoor’s powerful serve.
Alcaraz didn’t lose patience and took the set to a “tiebreak” in which he took advantage of several mistakes by his opponent to take a 5-2 cushion and pocket the sleeve.
Comfortable with the advantage, the Spaniard let go of tension and managed to break Grikspoor’s serve at the first opportunity, paving the way to the round of 16, where he will meet British promise Jack Draper (56 in the ATP).
Alcaraz, who last year became the youngest number one player in history to win the US Open, celebrated his 100th win in a total of 132 matches in his stellar career at Indian Wells.
