Just a few hours before playing the first leg of the Clausura 2022 semi-final against Pachuca, America announced that it will play a friendly match against Chelsea, of the English Premier League, on July 16 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
“It is an honor for us to play with a world-class team, thanks for the invitation. America’s sporting president, Santiago Baños, said in a statement issued yesterday by the club.
This will be the third friendly match between the two teams to be held in the United States. In 2007, the English club defeated Azulcrimas 2-1 in Stanford, California, and in 2009, defeated them again (2-0) in Dallas, Texas.
Likewise, this meeting is part of a tour that Chelsea will be taking in July across the United States. After facing America, the Premier League side will face Charlotte on Wednesday, July 20 at Bank of America Stadium in that city.
While he will play on Saturday the 23rd against Arsenal, also from the Premier League, at Camping World Stadium, in Orlando, Florida.
In turn, the Eagles will also face Lyon and San Jose Earthquakes from the United States in June.
Facing the first game of the semi-final against Tuzos, tonight at the Azteca Stadium, Baños left the door open to the possibility of interim coach Fernando Ortiz remaining in his position permanently.
“We haven’t talked about it, we’re not in a hurry. We’re focused on the match against Pachuca. He’s very excited and has the qualities to keep going,” he said in an interview with Fox Sports.
