Thanks above all to the single “Padam Padam” and the album that included it “Tension”, Kylie Minogue returned to the forefront with another global success, embraced not only by the public, but also by the critics, after 35 years. A musical career as a proud ambassador of pop music.
“I no longer feel like pop artists are being undervalued like I started to do,” the Australian artist says in an interview with EFE, just a few days after publishing her 16th studio album.
In this sense, he remembers those days in his country, “where the scene was definitely more rock music,” when he decided to jump from his role in the legendary series “Neighbours” into music with his first album, “Kylie.” (1988), which included songs such as “I Should Be So Lucky.”
“So I was this little girl from the TV series who launched ‘The Loco-Motion’ and it more or less hijacked the sales charts for weeks. It was something quite extraordinary, but they still didn’t give me a lot of credibility, as if I didn’t deserve it.”
Over time, he believes he finally earned that credit, at least in his personal capacity. “I don’t have the perspective from which to say whether pop music, as an art form, has achieved that or not, but it seems more widespread,” he adds.
Over the years, it has become common to talk about her as an “icon,” although she says with a laugh: “I didn’t feel like an icon when I woke up this morning before going to hair and makeup,” and points out that it is not something you should consider in your life. “Not in the lowest moments, nor in the most challenging moments.”
Minogue (Melbourne, 1968) has gone through many of these events, both personally (she overcame cancer) and professionally, such as when she broke up with her long-time manager and released “Kiss Me Once” (2014) and then “Golden.” (2014). (2018), his country album that tried to start a different musical era.
Album “For Liberation”
His previous work “Disco” (2020), which focuses on the sound of dance music from the 1970s, was published in the midst of a waning epidemic and was unable to tour, but it brought it back to attention from critics and the public, as if everything was preparing him for “Stress” (BMG).
“When I started this album, I didn’t want to feel the weight of what was going on (with Covid-19) and I think that shows. For me, both albums are about freeing your mind and yourself to do things again, and they seem like great albums to me.”
The initial concept for their new album was to craft songs around the sound of the 1980s, but they soon abandoned this idea in favor of opening up the repertoire to composers other than Minogue and her trusted band.
“That’s when the record really took off. The premise was simply to make a ‘Kylie album’ and have fun with it,” he says of the recording process.
Thus, there were tracks like “10 out of 10”, produced by Oliver Heldens as a nod to the “dance halls” of the gay community, such as “Hands” or “Badam Padam”, “cool” in the UK which became a hit. She is the only woman to have had at least one number one hit in each of the past five decades.
About to perform her first concert residency in Las Vegas, Minogue also wanted a song that paid tribute to this extraordinary American city, thus creating another favorite of hers, “Vegas High.”
“It came about after talking about a romantic vision of the journey there, like the feeling of driving through an increasingly dry and dusty environment to an oasis or landing at night on a plane and going through this world of dazzling lights,” he says. .
This residency will keep her busy at least until May next year, but she is looking forward to finding the extra time to organize her first world tour in many years for this artist who has had one of the strongest careers in music.
