Venezuelan judoka Marcos Blanco (B1) was runner-up at the Grand Prix in Warwick, UK, achieving the sports classification of the Tokyo 2020+1 Paralympic Games.
According to the system’s methodology, Blanco will benefit from the Protected Ranking, which proves that the top three in the B1 category rank automatically, regardless of their position in the registry. This will be official on June 28 when the global list will be revised by the Epsa Judo organization.
In the tournament, Blanco (-60 kg) managed to beat his Brazilian counterpart, Marquez, in his first match with Waza Ari, and later did the same with Spanish opponent Borja, taking the win by scoring Ippon.
In the final, a competition that awarded him second place in the discipline’s latest scoring event, the Venezuelan awarded the gold medal to the representative of Georgia, Zurab, who is currently 11th on the international high performer list.
For his part, his compatriot Marcos Falcon, in the division (-66 kg), defeated the Portuguese judoka, Vieira, with Ippon, then fell to Spanish judoka Ibanez with two kicks. Also, in his third participation, he defeated North American Tanaka, who is seventh in the standings, along with Ippon as well.
At the end of the day and in the dispute for third place, the Venezuelan defeated his Kazakh rival, Turumbitov, by scoring Ippon and thus achieving the bronze medal.
For his concept, Ovidio Almeida, the participation of the Venezuelans has been very good so far. He commented, “Both athletes showed an excellent technical level when they won matches due to great superiority, similarly in those who lost they were very close as well.”
According to the current world ranking, Blanco is 15th, while Falcón is 18th and Espinoza is 19th.
