New UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his Irish counterpart Simon Harris met in London on Wednesday, committing to rebuild their “unique partnership”, recognising that it was time to “reset” their close relationship. “As a first step towards rebuilding this unique partnership, the Prime Minister and the Taoiseach committed to holding annual summits to assess their work together to deepen and reinvigorate cooperation.” “The two leaders highlighted the ‘ties that unite our two countries’ through geography, history, family, business, politics and culture, and agreed to work in the coming weeks to strengthen and enhance all of these aspects,” reads a statement from the British Prime Minister’s Office. “They also spoke about the Good Friday Agreements, which marked the beginning of the end of the conflict in Northern Ireland, and the measures needed to support them for the communities and victims affected by them. They also spoke about support for Ukraine, the need for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip that would allow for the release of all hostages and greater cooperation from London with the European Union.” Finally, they agreed to meet again in Dublin on 7 September.
