Incompatibility slows down dialogue in the Lebanese presidential elections

The Free Patriotic Movement and the Lebanese Forces will not interfere in calling Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri about the possibility of reaching an understanding, and tomorrow’s session is on the road to failure, as happened with its predecessors, according to analysts.

The stalemate in the dialogue will affect the extension of the power vacuum until next year, and the Lebanese will celebrate Christmas amid a political crisis and deteriorating living conditions.

According to Al-Jumhuriya newspaper, the tenth round of responsibilities for electing the next Lebanese head of state will be the last in 2022, and it is expected that the return to the Legislative Council will not be before January 10.

In this context, President Berri and Prime Minister Najib Mikati discussed yesterday the political developments and the results of their visit and meetings in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia while they were attending the first Arab-Chinese summit.

Regarding the absence of dialogue, Qassem Hashem, a member of the Development and Liberation Bloc, confirmed to Al-Anbaa newspaper that the opponents of the agreement are hiding behind headlines and slogans that are far from the communication and consensus required by the current stage.

For his part, Representative Wael Abu Faour indicated that the dialogue does not contradict or cancel the constitutional mechanism for appointing the President of the Republic, and called on the political forces to reconsider and not obstruct the elections.

From this standpoint, the coordinator of the Arab Resistance Movement, Sheikh Abdel Salam Al-Harash, called on Parliament to expedite the process of appointing a new president who represents the nation’s concerns and carries out his responsibilities before the people.

After nine parliamentary sessions, no candidate received the support of the majority, and the political body retained the names of Michel Moawad and Suleiman Franjieh in the game, as they are the preferred candidates of the Maronite Christian community for the post of head of state.

A group of parties insists on moving forward with MP Moawad, whom the other party considers a difficult figure. Meanwhile, the positions of the head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Gebran Bassil, are delaying the appointment of the leader of the Marada Movement, Franjieh.

From the outside, the UN emphasized the urgency of electing a new president without delay. Meanwhile, France, the United States, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have moved onto the domestic scene as influential traditionalists, experts said.

In the face of this situation, Deputy Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Naim Qassem, stressed that the priority at the present time is to appoint the next head of state, who is able to support a rescue plan for the national economy, without serving Israel or the United States.

Lebanon is trying to elect the fourteenth president of the republic after independence, after the end of Michel Aoun’s six-year term, on October 31.
