After a tough race on Saturday, finishing fifth in very difficult conditions due to rain, including a red flag, Gonzalo knew that on Sunday he had to get on the board in the second race at Donington Park and give a step forward that would allow him to fight for the podium places. The goal was clear, to get as many points as possible for the Yamaha World Cup general classification on a track where he had never ridden before. So the driver from Teruel got off to a good start, taking first place at the first corner, followed by Di Bercio and Bohr, with Fitch in fourth.
This group of four drivers immediately built a two-second advantage at the end of the second lap, although the pursuers caught up with them on lap five and the group was reduced to seven drivers. Fitch tried to escape, but with three laps to go the group formed again and in a thrilling finish they kept passing each other, with Gonzalo Sanchez even taking the lead in the final sector. But at the penultimate corner, Fitch and Di Bercio passed him, taking third across the line. In the end, Fitch was penalised at Parc Ferme for exceeding track limits and the victory eventually went to Alessandro Di Bercio.
With this podium, Gonzalo maintains the lead in the classification, although the gap has been reduced by Mark Veach and at the moment the driver from Teruel has a ten-point lead over the Majorcan, which leaves the third-placed player already 37 points behind. The racing rules are evolving, and everything indicates that the title will be between the Spanish drivers. The next event will be at Magny Cours from September 6 to 8, and it will be very important to do well to reach the final test at Motorland with enough peace of mind to become champion.
