Madrid, August 9 (.). – Iberdrola (BME:) will invest 150 million pounds (about 170 million euros) in building a green hydrogen plant to decarbonize the UK’s largest shipping port, Felixtowe, located in the county of Suffolk.
According to the Spanish multinational reported Tuesday in a press release, the facility will be operational in 2026 and will produce 14,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually in the first phase, an amount that could double in the future.
The terminal will provide hydrogen for the vehicles and machinery used by the port and will be able to fuel up to 1,300 trucks of green hydrogen.
It will also be used to feed unpolluted fuel for trains carrying goods to the port.
It will also have the potential to be used in the production of green ammonia or ethanol, which can provide clean fuels for marine transportation and create opportunities to export it to other international markets.
The project, which will be developed by the group’s UK subsidiary, ScottishPower, along with Hutchison (LON 🙂 Ports, is expected to be located on vacant land within the port, with an extension similar to a football field.
The port of Felixtowe is located near the offshore wind farms promoted by Iberdrola in the British waters of the North Sea.
The company has already commissioned East Anglia ONE, 714 MW, in this region and plans to build the East Anglia Hub offshore wind power complex, which will combine three projects with a total installed capacity of 2,900 MW.
