I use ChatGPT to set up my classes as a math teacher

This article is based on a conversation with Shannon Ahern, a 27-year-old math and science teacher from Dublin, Ireland who uses ChatGPT to set up her classes. The text has been edited for length and clarity.

when i heard about chat From OpenAI last December, I panic.

I had one An existential crisis with my job As a high school math and science teacher. I am proud of creating original and unique resources for my classes that I communicate with my students.

So when I saw the ChatGPT ability to create a math lesson in a matter of secondsI wondered if my role as a teacher would still make sense, what my goal really was, and what this new AI tool would bring us.

I was hesitant to try it for a while, but I knew that ChatGPT would become more and more popular and I don’t want to be left behind. Everyone has been talking about how a chatbot helps save time at their jobs, so I decided to do that too.

Whether educators want it or not, ChatGPT is here: why so many believe AI should be embraced rather than rejected

I used it to make Lesson planning and creating new resources for my class. When I saw the results I knew I had nothing to fear.

When I first used ChatGPT, I started playing around with it because it sounded like a joke: I asked her to write poems about the Pythagorean theorem and a Taylor Swift-esque song about math. Even though it was pretty silly stuff, I took it out to my students to see what they thought and said they loved it.

This was what gave me the motivation I needed to keep trying it. Since then, I have asked ChatGPT to write my classes and write exam questions.

until You have managed to create an exercise sheet where you are asked to fill in the “blanks” Entering my lecture notes into the bot and having it remove keywords, a task that would have been too time consuming to do manually. He also developed an interactive game to surprise my students.

As a result, my productivity has skyrocketed.

chat It saved me hours of manual labor preparing for classes And dramatically reduce all paperwork. Before AI, I would stay up late preparing study materials, and the next day I would arrive in class feeling mentally sluggish and tired. Now, I feel like I’m going to work relaxed and strong.

ChatGPT isn’t perfect, but it can save hours of work if used properly

ChatGPT isn’t perfect, so Always review the documents you create and get back to you. He often misjudges things. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does I point it out with a new question and the bot fixes it.

Like losing my job in ChatGPT too I was very concerned that my students would learn to use it to cheat with the exercises. But then I remembered that students always cheated – either by copying their classmates’ homework or asking Big Brother to write their essays for them – and I don’t think ChatGPT is going to change things.

Although these concerns have led to the tool being banned worldwide, I hope my school will not ban ChatGPT. The OpenAI bot is a great educational tool that students can use as a private tutor. We are in the generation of artificial intelligence, and students need to learn how to use it responsibly.

The Spanish ‘edtech’ sector is not afraid of ChatGPT and is confident in its ability to integrate technology into its business: “It will change everything”

I still understand why Some teachers suspect it’s a good idea Introducing it to primary and secondary school students. Implementing ChatGPT in everyday work can also be a challenge for teachers who didn’t grow up with computers in the classroom. But I am sure the tool will be useful to you.

After all, With artificial intelligence we will be able to do all the tasks we love fasterlike repetitive work, and it will give us more time to plan lessons creatively.

We can even ask ChatGPT for advice in the same way we would ask a colleague with more experience than us if we need help with, say, creating an Excel spreadsheet. such as Google and Microsoft tools, ChatGPT will end up being part of our educational tools.

and, most importantly , I don’t think ChatGPT will replace teachers or make our work difficult. Teaching is essential and human contact is part of student learning.

Now I keep discovering new and innovative ways to use ChatGPT and I will definitely continue to use it in the long run.
