Hurricane Fiona hits Bermuda with heavy rain and strong winds

Strong Hurricane Fiona hit the Caribbean island of Bermuda in the early hours of Friday With heavy rain and strong winds, it continues its course towards the coasts of northeastern Canada.

Before hitting Bermuda, The US National Hurricane Center indicated that the Category 4 hurricane had sustained winds of more than 215 kilometers per hour at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour.

Island authorities opened shelters, closed schools and offices before Fiona arrived.

Bermuda’s prime minister urged residents to take care of themselves and watch for announcements from authorities after the cyclone.

The Canadian Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch covering the coast of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island.

Fiona can reach the Canadian coast as a powerful post-tropical cyclone with hurricane-force winds.

Before reaching Bermuda, Fiona caused flooding and severe damage in Puerto Ricoprompting US President Joe Biden to say Thursday that the federal government is ready to help the island recover.

So far, Hurricane Fiona caused at least five deaths: two in Puerto Rico, two in the Dominican Republic and one in the Guadalupe archipelago.
