Miami.- The State Department will announce the results of the 2025 Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, also known as the visa lottery, which provides the opportunity for immigrants to legally reside and work in the United States.
This immigration program, created by the Immigration and Nationality Act, draws 55,000 residency cards or green cards annually to thousands of applicants for permanent residence, who are randomly selected by computer.
Citizens from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States who meet eligibility requirements can register and apply for the visa between October and November, with results announced in May of the following year.
This year, FY2025 Visa Lottery results will be announced starting Saturday, May 4 at 12 noon ET, and will be available through September 30, 2025.
The document awarded in this lottery grants the beneficiary permanent legal residency in the United States, and potentially allows him or her in the future to obtain American citizenship.
How do you know if you have been selected?
To find out if they have been selected, applicants must access Diversity Immigrant Visa Program website And select the “Check participant status” function.
Before accessing the page, it is important that you have the 16-digit confirmation number received at the time of registration, the surnames as registered on the form, the year of birth and the authentication code provided by the system.
After that, enter the required data and verification code and press “Submit” to see the result.
What do you do if you win?
If selected, you will be directed to a confirmation page, which will provide you with detailed instructions regarding the following requirements, including fees associated with your immigrant visa application.
Once they know the result, they can begin the immigrant visa and alien registration application process, and must submit Form DS-260 electronically, by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS in English).
They will then proceed to an in-person interview at a US embassy or consulate, where issues such as criminal records and security matters will be evaluated to determine their eligibility to immigrate to the United States.
Including family members, successful applicants must obtain their visas by 30 September 2025, as no visas will be issued or amendments approved after that date.
Unique verification method
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs authorities confirmed that they will not send notification letters or emails about the selection, and the information will not be published through the country’s embassies and consulates, because the only official way to know the winners is the website created by the program.
They also noted that winning the lottery does not guarantee residency, and that all those selected must meet all eligibility requirements, according to US law.
This includes being a citizen of a country with a low rate of immigration to the United States, having 12 years of elementary or secondary education or equivalent, and at least two years of work experience within the past five years in an eligible occupation.
Every year the United States government publishes a list of countries whose residents cannot apply because more than 50,000 citizens of these countries have immigrated to the United States in the past five years.
For the 2025 process, countries that were not eligible to apply include Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines and South Korea. United Kingdom, Venezuela and Vietnam.
People who participated in the visa lottery have until September 30, 2024 to verify their win.
