The announcement of the transformation of CONACyTH into a State Secretariat seems to me to be good news. The announced appointment as new Secretary of State of a scientist who has contributed to knowledge in the branches of biological sciences, Dr. Rosaura Ruiz, encourages a positive outlook. The new official in the next Cabinet will be responsible for running the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation. Bringing the humanities closer to science has already been a success, because the production of knowledge makes sense when it is at the service of humanity. I also find it encouraging that this new General Secretariat was announced at the same time as the first six appointments of those who will form the next government. It is a sign of the importance of this new government body. For those who are asking Claudia Shimbum to show her own orientation, the appointment of a new Secretary of State in Mexico is a signal: this is a coming government that will give science the importance it deserves. This even indicates the appointment of not a politician or professional politician at the head of this unique institution, but a scientist who graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and who has followed an academic path that illustrates her vocation: graduated from UNAM as a doctor of biology after obtaining her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the same Faculty of Science of UNAM, Rosaura Ruiz embarked on the path taken by many Mexican scientists, by looking for prestigious universities to complete her scientific training. She did a postdoctoral period at the University of California, which also recognized her academic quality by inviting her as a professor, the same quality that the University of the Basque Country in Spain granted her. The Autonomous University of Guerrero awarded her an honorary doctorate, as did the Latin American Institute of Educational Communications (ILCE). There is therefore reason to believe that the upcoming government scientific activities and the in-depth study of humanity will be in good health. On the other hand, the new head of state who will assume the presidency of the republic sees the Ministry of Education as having a political negotiator at its head: Mario Delgado. Several voices, even within the ruling Morena party, have expressed doubts, if not confusion, about the aforementioned appointment. In fact, Mario Delgado comes to the Ministry of Education from the presidency of the party that swept the last elections. It seems to me that the explanation for this appointment is that it is conceivable that the aforementioned General Secretariat faces urgent problems that must be solved in the area of the political demands of the powerful teachers’ unions: the Confederation of Education Workers (SNTE) and the National Union. Coordinator of Education Workers (CENTE), whose demands and mobilizations have devoted their efforts to defending workers, more than just proposing new theoretical and practical perspectives for education. The truth is that Mario Delgado has proven to be a good political negotiator, and as such he will assume a fundamental task: to solve the problems raised by the mobilizations of the workers’ organizations while the experts in the educational systems do their work. That is to say, Mario Delgado’s task, as I have noted, is to maintain a balanced relationship with the unions while those who understand the educational systems improve the quality of education in Mexico, especially basic and higher secondary education. At the same time, the new Secretariat of Science and Humanities must support the missions of research, creation and dissemination of knowledge, focusing on the fundamental problems not only of the nation but of the world. A mission of profound dimensions. But a scientist like Rosaura Ruiz is more than ready to face this task. This is demonstrated by her career. Even her interest in evolutionary processes brings her closer to anthropology, while her political sensitivity tells her that science must be an instrument of intervention in the fight against poverty and social inequality in a country like Mexico. The next term of government raises many questions, among others, how the efforts to reduce social inequality will continue and, in my opinion, very important, how the necessary dialogue will be carried out with the group that constitutes the left in the country. Nothing less than this, requires a determined action and a frank recognition of all those who have fought in this country, in different trenches, to achieve a better world. Bringing the left into agreement is a task of great complexity, but it is essential for the health of the nation. The recent electoral results in France and England have awakened optimism in those of us who imagine that the fundamental problem in this world of global history is social inequality, with all its injustices and the corruption that accompanies it. Let us hope that the expectations of the next government will not be disappointed.
